Urbane Produktion am Billebecken : 1st Place
The design workshop for “urbane Produktion am Billebecken” im Hamburg was organised by the Billebogen Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH in co-operation with the planning authorities for the City and Central Hamburg; it invited three highly experienced design teams to develop a konzept for this existing industrial area in eastern Hamburg. JOTT was invited to work in with Lorenzen Mayer Architekten of Berlin and Copenhagen on the project. Our team’s proposals were eventually chosen as the basis for the further urban development of the site.
Our proposals for Billebecken were developed on a typological and systematic approach with the aim of developing a new model for high-density urban production, industry and commerce in Hamburg, turning the classic german “Gewerbegebiet” into a dynamic, urban and fully intergrated part of the cityscape.
Our approach first identified the efficient and effective typologies that the various forms of industry and businesses in the area would require and then considered alternative urban frameworks that would allow these typologies to work together and around each other. The intention is to foster a rich mix of industries and activities that can co-exist, grow and thrive without needing to relocate out of the quarter.
Having identified a framework that robust enough, and flexible enough, to allow these project aims our team continued on to embrace the specificity of Billebecken; the factors, culturem, spaces and activities that make it special. Factors that we can all be incorporated into the evolved urban vision for the site.
