Urban Moments : Ideas for a Waldorfschule - 2nd Prize
WEINMEISTERSTRASSE, BERLIN-MITTE
The plans for the Freie-Waldorfschule in Berlin-Mitte required an idea that was simultaneously a specific reaction to a unique urban situation and the considered philosophy and pedagogic of the Waldorfschule. Our response was a concept based around ‘urban moments’, specific situations and spaces around the campus each different, each with its own specific characteristics, atmosphere and a strong sense of place. An early identification of the key ‘moments’ around the campus (both existing and proposed) enables a web of these points to be developed that covers the whole site and surroundings, within and around this web our masterplan can easily find the right spaces for the new buildings, the developing learning environment and the human, varied and intimate scale the Waldorf pedagogic requires.
Our submission for the urban design competition outlining the campus’s development was awarded 2nd Prize, on the basis of this JOTT architecture and urbanism has been invited to take part in the detailed design competition for the individual buildings.
